Back in the day…when one built or purchased a home one would either pay cash, take a 3 year mortgage or take a 7 year mortgage.
My how times have changed.
My redhead and I are basically debt free. Over the last few years we have actually created a positive net worth (believe me, it was unintentional) and we are seriously considering building our own home and doing so for cash.
Now don’t get me wrong, we’re not rich by most anyone’s definition, but the idea of a modest debt free home seems more “peaceful” than having an opulent home we end up being a slave to maintaining.
Plus I want to see if we can’t build a “basically” normal looking house that is eco-neutral or even eco-beneficial.
We figure we will need to build a tiny home (or buy a small trailer) to live in first. Then, while we are living in that home, we begin to build our small but not tiny house. After a year or so we can “move” into the house and I can take our “tiny” home and make it my writing retreat.
If you’ve done a “build as you go” house I would be interested in hearing from you.

Tough to find something to post on here, huh Rachael? Thanks for making the effort.
I have temporarily changed my secret identity from Whore Church to No Hassles. At some point I will change back.
Sorry if that was confusing.

This is kind-of a late reply… but build-as-you-go may prove to be a lot of hassle, because you’ll constantly be required to submit building permit applications to your local municipality!
Have you done it… since it’s now 2009… two years later!
